A Wireless Electricity Monitor can also show the amount of greenhouse gas emissions (CO2) produced by your utility supplier as a result.

Can I Use a Wireless Electricity Monitor to challenge my bill with my Electricity supplier?

No. A Wireless Electricity Monitor is intended as an educational aid in the understanding of the cost of operating electrical appliances in the home, to stimulate behavioural change in how we use electricity in the home, and not to replace your accurate electricity revenue meter.

A Wireless Electricity monitor measures the electrical current flowing into your house/office/school/etc when appliances are turned on using Current Transformer Sensor(s). The measurement data collected by the transmitter is sent to the display unit using a wireless signal. The display calculates and displays the different cost, energy, and the carbon footprint of the electricity being used.

Voltage (volts) is the measure of electrical potential and Current (amps) signifies the amount of electricity flowing through the wires in your home. Both volts & amps are necessary to provide electricity for your household appliances.

Does the voltage get measured by a Wireless Electricity Monitor?
No. The voltage is nominally fixed in accordance with country regulations (110v, 120v, 220v, 230v, 240v) and these voltage settings can be selected on the display.
What voltage should I be selecting for South Africa?
In the South Africa our electricity supply has been 220V.
What is power?
Power is the product of the Voltage x Current, and is measured in Watts. A watt is the amount of energy being transferred to or from somewhere each second.
What is a kilowatt(kW)?
A kilowatt is 1000 watts
What is a Kilowatt hour (kWh)
A kilowatt hour is equivalent to 1000 watts being used for the duration of 1 hour. ie Operating 10 standard 100W Light Bulbs at the same time for one hour.

The Wireless Electricity Monitor product warranty is for a period of 1 year from date of purchase for all defects in workmanship or materials. All defective parts will be repaired free of charge or replaced. Proof of purchase is required.

If I clip the sensor over one of my electrical appliance cables will it measure usage of that appliance?

No. The sensor is unable to measure the current flow when clipped over the twin or three core mains leads of any household appliance.

Also no reading can be achieved by clipping the sensor over a twin core cable sometimes used in the wiring between the meter and consumer unit / fusebox or over armoured or screened cable.

Can an a Wireless Electricity Monitor be used as a Sub-Meter ie Flat Rental?

The Monitors are not designed as a means of measuring electricity consumption for billing purposes.

Do I need an electrician to fit the Sensor to my electricity supply?

The Electricity Monitor is a DIY fit. Please view the video below.

Where do I connect the sensor?

The sensor in a normal single phase installation. The sensor clips over the insulated live wire running between the meter and distribution/fuse box. The sensor can be clipped over the cable anywhere between the meter and distribution/fuse box i.e. does not need to be connected at the meter.

We live in a flat and our meter is outside in shared meter cabinet which is some distance from our flat, but our fuse-box is inside the flat. Will we be able to fit the sensor to the wire that feeds the fusebox or do we need to connect at the meter?

The sensor does not need to be connected at the meter end of this type of installation. We would recommend fitting the sensor, if possible, to the live feed to your fusebox which we would expect to be in your flat as this would then maximise the different positions in your flat that the portable display could be placed or carried to.

Please could you clarify if it's possible to use this product when living in flats, where the electricity meter is on the ground floor and I am living on the 2nd floor. Is it possible the signal could be impaired by other devices in between?

We would expect your consumer unit to be located in your flat, and would recommend that you fit the sensor to the incoming live cable to the consumer unit, provided you have have access to that cable. Typical wireless transmission range is up to 30m (100ft) indoors although this will vary/reduce depending number/type of obstacles in the way.
